The "index value" (also called the "signal-to-cutoff ratio") is a technical term having to do with how this type of HIV-antibody test is conducted. Values less than 0.90, like yours, are HIV testing is a crucial component of our public health system offering a method for people to determine their HIV status and to have access to immediate treatment if it were found that they are HIV positive. There is equivocal range between 0.33 to 0.99 and more than 1.0 are clearly reactive. Index Value of <1.00 means that no significant concentration of the antibodies have been found. So, this is a NEGATIVE HIV result. However if you were exposed to HIV just now, it is recommended to have the test repeated in 3 months to look for antibodies again. I hope this helps. Index values varies from lab to lab and instrument to instrument and reagent to reagent used for testing. An increase in the index value from one test to the next does not mean that the virus is multiplying and that eventually you will test positive. The HIV test searches for two types of HIV antibodies.
