Fed lowers federal funds rate

Banks borrow money to keep their reserves at the mandated level, and the Fed sets the interest rate. This is known as the federal funds rate. The lower the federal funds rate, the more money banks tend to lend, as they can cheaply borrow the cash they need to make loans. The Federal Reserve lowered the target range for its federal funds rate by 100bps to 0-0.25 percent and launched a massive $700 billion quantitative easing program during an emergency move on March 15th to protect the US economy from the effects of the coronavirus. Investors naturally want bonds with a higher interest rate. This reduces the desirability for bonds with lower rates, including the bond only paying 5% interest. Fed Funds Rate (Current target rate 1.75-2.00) What it means: The interest rate at which banks and other depository institutions lend money to each other, usually on an overnight basis. The law requires banks to keep a certain percentage of their customer's money on reserve, where the banks earn no interest on it.
