Oil Shale is gathered resource that can be used to craft Asphalt and Gas Cans. Oil Shale cannot be crafted, instead it can only be found from mining in the Desert Biome. Players often have to dig roughly 20 blocks deep before finding this item. With the latest unbalanced changes in A14 that hands out gas like candy, there's really no point to go looking for oil shale any more. For example, Day 91, I have 4 "bases" and each one has around 8000 oil cans on hand and I have about 50+ oil barrels spread out amongst them as well. All from just looting gas stations and taking apart cars. As all ore veins i tend to curiously find them under clay deposits. So dig from a clay deposit in a desert biome. Should encounter Oil Shale along with coal eventually. Also desert is a prime location to gather concrete ingredients while you are at it . Jackpot! I kept digging and also hit iron ore and lead. I ended up carrying out about two and have stacks of oil shale on that first day. I don't know if I just got lucky or if oil shale has a high probability of being found around most surface boulders in the desert since this is my first oil shale mine in Alpha 17.1.
